General Questions

I have questions- how can I get answers?

This website offers a great depth of knowledge, an ever expanding FAQ list, example source codes for developers, a user forum for knowledge exchange, and importantly real experts available to answer your personal questions. If your questions are not answered by this website then you can try to contact our support team by using the support ticketing system or alternatively, please add a message to our forum. One of our support technicians will try to answer your questions with the briefest delay.

What are my options in order to interface to other operating systems such as Linux or OS X?

Golden-i^® runs Windows Embedded CE 6.0. It interfaces to the outside world using industry standard Bluetooth (v2.1 EDR) and WIFI (b/g). Within the realms of these basic data transport mechanisms Golden-i^® can interoperate with any operating system that also supports these standards. For example Golden-i^® can communicate via HTTP (web browser) to other machines; it can also perform remote desktop (GoToMyPC or Citrix) to full access the other device. Golden-i^® is equivalent to your office computer…if your office computer can talk to other operating systems then so can Golden-i^®.

What are the common Golden-i commands?

There are a number of common commands that may be utilised in a number of Golden-i screens. For all command queries, please use "Golden-i Help" as outlined below.

"Golden-i Help"
Using this voice command will display a dialog listing all of the available commands in context. Additionally, basic status information will also be displayed.

"File Explorer"
The File Explorer voice command will return you to the hub of Golden-I. Within File Explorer you can then navigate onto applications such as My Photos, My Telephone or My Documents.

"Golden-i Wake-Up"
Golden-I has a battery-saving feature which causes the Golden-I to enter a state of sleep after a specified amount of time. The ‘Golden-I Wake Up’ command will cause the Golden-I headset to reactivate if a dark blank screen appears/sleep mode has become active.

"Previous"
The Previous voice command will return you to the previous page you had accessed.

"Window Close"
If you need to close the current screen you have accessed, use this command to close the current window.

"Go to Homepage"
This command will navigate the system to the File Explorer (detailed above).

Can I Use Native WinCE Applications on Golden-i?

Native WinCE applications can be used in Golden-i. However, you will need to optimise these for speech control and head-tracking as appropriate using the supplied SDK.

Do you have application X or program Y running on Golden-i®?

Kopin's approach over the next 9-12 months is to supply a WindowsCE-based computing device to key software developers ahead of a full production release. Kopin will supply a stable operating system and development libraries to enable Golden-i's key and unique features such as speech recognition, head-tracking and micro-display. It is then the goal of the key software developers to build enterprise applications on top of this platform, so that when Golden-i^® hits full production it will have a large software suite available for it.

When will feature X or function Y be released?

Depending on the feature there are two possible answers: If the feature is part of our core functionality list then it's release will be governed by our published release schedule. See News and Download sections for more information. If the feature lies outside of our core functionality then it will be for 3rd party developers to add the requested functionality. As more developers come onboard we will try to coordinate a list of 'who is developing what' and 'when to expect what'. Alternatively you can write to us via email (see Contact) and request a specific feature. We will then try to connect you to teams who might be able to develop the features for you.

What is the latest software release for Golden-i®?

How do I access the Windows CE standard shell Desktop?

The WinCE Desktop can be booted and used within Golden-i^® by simply removing the microSD card from Golden-i® and booting without it. This will cause the WinCE desktop to boot up.

What is the recommended development environment for Golden-i?

For Golden-I development we recommend that developers use a fully patched Microsoft Windows 7 operating system running Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. We further recommend installing the SOTI software available for purchase here, and download here. Developers should connect to the headset using USB 2.0 or higher.

Connectivity

How do I connect to the Internet ?

There are two ways two connect Golden-i^® to the Internet or Intranet. The first is via low-power WIFI built directly into Golden-i^®. The WIFI is reduced in power from normal levels due to its close proximity to the head. So while being safe for operation it does mean range and throughput are less than you'd expect from full power devices. Golden-i^® delivers WIFI speeds of about 6 Mbits/sec when WIFI is turned on. The second method is via low-power Bluetooth. The Bluetooth radio in Golden-i^® will communicate with a device such as your cell phone and then use that to connect to the Internet via WIFI, 3G or GSM networks. This method is called Personal Area Networking (PAN) and is supported by most modern cell-phones or smart-phones. The connection speed is usually limited by the Bluetooth connection to 2MBits/sec.

How do I connect to a Bluetooth peripheral device ?

The Golden-i^® system today supports the use of Bluetooth Human Interface Devices (HID). These can be discovered by Golden-i^®, paired and used by Golden-i^®. HID devices typically encapsulate Mice and Keyboards. The default PIN used for connections is '0000'.

How do I pair with my cell phone to make audio calls?

A telephony control panel dedicated to using the Golden-i^® as a Bluetooth earpiece to a telephone can be accessed using the command ‘My Telephone Controls’. This control panel oversees the pairing of Golden-i^® to a Mobile Phone using the Bluetooth ‘Hands-Free’ protocol. (The Golden-i^® unit must be made Discoverable, and then a phone can be used to search for and connect to the Golden-i^®). Once paired, incoming phone calls to the mobile phone will be routed to the Golden-i^®. A message box will be shown on the screen to alert the user of an incoming call that can be either accepted or declined. On acceptance, the audio conversation will take place using the Golden-i^®. At the same time, the speech recognizer is still active, allowing the usual navigation of the Golden-i^® unit. Outgoing calls can also be made from Golden-i^®. The ability to view contacts lists from the phone is not yet in place, but the ability to type in, store and dial three favorite phones numbers is in place to demonstrate this capability.

Can I use a USB Mouse and Keyboard?

A USB Mouse and Keyboard can be used with Golden-i^® by connecting them to the external mini-USB port on Golden-i^®. This is particularly useful for software development or for running the WinCE desktop. However Golden-i^® uses a min-USB port and most mice and keyboards use a full-size USB port. Thus an adaptor is required. A good source for these adaptors is Vernier Software and Technology who sell a Standard –A to Mini-A adaptor for less than $10. Open the following link: http://www.vernier.com/products/accessories/usb-mini/. To use more than one USB device at once, a powered USB hub must be utilized.

I am having trouble getting my device to connect to my network. How can I fix this?

If you are having some problems in getting your headset to use a dynamic IP address on your network, please follow this FAQ. This occurs because the device is initially configured to use a fixed IP address and you will need to change the network settings on the headset to change this.

Connect a USB mouse to the headset
Start the device without an SD card inserted.
Go to Settings -> Control Panel
Choose “Cheetah WLAN”
Select the “IP Info” tab and click on “Config” (bottom right)
Check the option “Use server-assigned IP address”
Click OK to exit config panel
Click OK to exit Cheetah
Shutdown your device

Next time you turn the headset on, it will use a DHCP assigned IP address and you will be able to access your network properly.
